Portugal’s Madeira Welcomed 172k Visitors in September, Breaking Record for Highest Value

The tourism accommodation sector in Madeira, a region in Portugal, registered around 172,000 tourists in September, thus marking the highest per-tourist value ever reached in the month of September.

According to the Portugal News, more than 960,000 overnight stays were also generated in Madeira Island, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“Although overnight stays recorded in September 2022 were below the records of July and August of the same year – in which the threshold of one million was exceeded -that value corresponds to the highest ever in the month of September and the third highest monthly record ever,” the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) pointed out in this regard.

The statistics provided by DREM reveal that in this sector, there has been marked a year-to-year increase, with a growth of over 32.4 per cent in the number of guests and over 25 per cent in overnight stays.

The same source also shows that in September, there was a 16.1 per cent increase in overnight stays by local residents compared to the same month of 2021, with 205,900 residents in Portugal visiting Madeira during this month.

In addition, about 754,400 foreign visitors came to Madeira in September, which represented an increase of 27.7 per cent.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, in June, the number of overnight stays spent by tourists in Madeira and the Azores exceeded the pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019.

At the same time, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 2.7 million visitors and 7.2 million overnight stays.

The figures show that in the first half of 2022, the number of overnight stays increased by 252.4 per cent. On the other hand, compared to the same period in 2019, the number of beds decreased by 7.0 per cent.

As the Institute explains, in the second quarter of this year, the number of overnight stays increased by 209.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2019. Overnight stays by residents have increased by 55.6 per cent, while those by tourists have increased by 450.1 per cent.

Moreover, the Madeira Promotion Bureau and the SATA Group announced that a Madeira – New York operation would be launched throughout the year.

SATA Group also highlighted that direct flights from Madeira – New York are set to start this month on the third, which means that travellers from these two destinations will no longer have to worry about access when they arrive in Madeira or New York.
