The Turkish authorities have announced that nationals of Hungary are no longer required to present a passport in order to be permitted entry to Türkiye. Instead, they will only have to show a valid identity document.

The news was announced through a presidential decree a few days ago and confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Through an official statement on his official Facebook account, Minister Szijjártó said that all tourists from Hungary can now travel to Türkiye with their IDs.

“Good news for those travelling to Turkey: from now on, Hungarian tourists can enter Turkey with an ID card (without a passport). My friend Mevlüt promised and he fulfilled. Just the way he used to do,” the statement of Szijjártó reads.

Hungarians have also been exempt from the requirement to obtain a visa when reaching Türkiye for a short stay period – for 90 days within a 180-day period – for years now.

It is believed that the Turkish authorities decided to drop the passport requirement for Hungarians and allow entry with IDs in order to promote tourism to the country.

Data provided by the Turkish Statistical Office show from January until September of this year, the number of visitors that entered the country increased by 87,13 per cent compared to the same period last year. The same revealed that during this nine-month period a total of 40,246,899 nationals of other countries reached Türkiye.

Apart from citizens of Hungary, Türkiye applies facilitated entry rules for some other countries too.

For example, Türkiye permits visa-free entry for nationals of several countries. The list of countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter Türkiye includes a total of 17 countries, part of which, among others, are Greece, France, Spain, Norway, and Germany.

On the other hand, Turkish nationals still need a visa to enter the European Union, including Hungary, as the country has not reached an agreement with the EU yet.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, only Turkish nationals who hold a diplomatic passport, a service passport, or a special passport are exempt from the requirement to obtain a visa. This means that nationals of Türkiye who hold ordinary passports need a visa in order to be permitted entry to Hungary.
