Portugal Registered New Record of Visitors From US in September

Portugal has recorded a record number of tourist arrivals from the United States of America this September with more than 204,000 American guests arriving in the country.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) have revealed that this is the highest number of North American tourists in the national tourism accounts, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to statistics, the third foreign market in the country was the United States, which was ahead of France and Germany and was only behind the United Kingdom, with 262,000 guests, and Spain, with 213,000 visitors.

Between January and September, more than 1.1 million tourists arrived in Portugal from South America, which is an increase of about 200,000 more compared to the same period in 2019.

In addition, the statistics of Turismo de Portugal reveal that North Americans have chosen Lisbon as their main destination in Portigal, where about 1.1 million overnight stays were registered in this region also in the first eight months of the year.

On the other hand, the second place was taken by the North Region with 393,000 overnight stays, while the third place went to the Algarve, which had 258,000 overnight stays by American tourists.

Moreover, during September of this year, the tourism accommodation sector in Portugal registered 2.9 million visitors and 7.7 million overnight stays, marking an increase of +41.3 per cent and +37.4 per cent, respectively. As a result, compared to September 2019, there was an increase of 0.2 per cent and 0.7 per cent, respectively.

As for total revenues, INE data show that they increased by 70.3 per cent to €608.2 million, while income from accommodation reached €469.2 million, increasing by 74.5 per cent.

According to the report from INE, this figure increased by 21.3 per cent and 22.5 per cent respectively in total income and income from accommodation compared to September 2019. Furthermore, during the third quarter of this year, the number of beds in Portugal increased by 48.8 per cent, which means +2.9 per cent more compared to the third quarter of 2019.

Previously, the same authority revealed that a total of 183,215 tourists from the United States were welcomed in Portugal in July, a figure that exceeded the figures of June 2022. It was also reported that in June, Portugal registered 181,869 American tourists, which was considered the most significant increase since 2013 up until then.
