The freezing weather has already started to cause travel disruptions in some northern European countries, with some airports being forced to cancel flights. The United Kingdom is one of the countries that cancelled many flights on Sunday and Monday due to the freezing temperatures.

Other countries such as Poland, France, and Finland have also been experiencing travel disruptions as a result of the low temperatures, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Euronews explains that blizzards across the territory of Poland have caused large-scale travel disruptions and have also sparked snowslip warnings.

Taking into account the current situation, the Institute of Meteorology of Poland issued a weather warning, advising everyone to be careful when reaching regions affected by heavy snow.

France has also been affected by freezing temperatures. The same source stressed that the government of France just recently extended the snow and ice warning, placing a total of 28 departments from Brittany to Alsace on high alert.

Over the week, France expects an average of two to five centimetres of snow across the country. For this reason, Meteo France said that the extension of the warning would be generalised.

Similar to the countries mentioned above, harsh weather conditions have hit Finland as well as the other Scandinavian countries.

Earlier this week, the southern parts of Finland were hit with strong winds as well as heavy snow showers. Taking into account the current situation in the country, Helsinki officials have warned motorists against making journeys that are not necessary.

The manager of Fintraffic, Sanna Piilinen has also advised everyone to be careful. Piilinen advised everyone to keep a safe distance when driving and to adjust their speed depending on the weather and road conditions.

While the cold weather has gripped several parts of the country, travellers have not been completely discouraged from reaching the continent to celebrate Christmas and New Year.

For those who have decided to reach Europe for Christmas but still have not decided on a destination, SchengenVisaInfo.com previously listed the top ten EU Christmas markets for 2022.
