As the data from Destatis points out, the number of overnight stays stands 8.1 per cent below pre-pandemic levels, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The busiest months in terms of overnight stays spent in Germany include July and August, with 56.3 and 58.2 million nights spent, respectively. In 2021, the highest number of nights spent was recorded in August -55.9 million, while other months recorded considerably fewer nights, such as 47.9 million overnight in July and 45.1 million in September.

Comparing data from pre-pandemic times to 2022, the overnight stays dropped by 39 per cent in January, totalling 16.2 million compared to 26.9 million recorded in the same time in 2020.

Similarly, fewer nights were spent in February of 2022 compared to 2020, indicating that despite there is progress, these numbers have yet to be restored. In detail, 18.8 million nights were recorded in February 2022, compared to 29.9 million in the corresponding time in 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic occurred. These rates represent a 37 per cent decrease in overnight stays.

In general, overnight stays stood at 25.1 million in March, 35.7 million in April and 43 million in May. In addition, October and November overnight stay reached 2019 levels – recording 44.3 and 29.8 million, respectively, compared to the corresponding time when 45.6 and 32.4 million overnight stays were recorded.

However, comparing 2022 levels to post-March 2020 levels and the beginning of 2021, significant progress is noticed. For example, 15.8 million nights were spent in German overnight stays during March 2020, with these numbers dropping even lower – 4.3 million in April.

The number of overnight stays increased by 2.7 per cent in October, which shows that the level of overnight stays has yet another three per cent to reach pre-pandemic levels.

“A very strong increase was registered in overnight stays by guests from abroad, according to statistics. They increased by 75.7 per cent to 8.9 million. Cross-border tourism in Germany is still a long way from the pre-crisis level,” the figures provided by the Federal Statistics Office revealed.
