Tourists Spent €87 Million in Spain Last Year

The data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has revealed that last year a total of 71.6 million international tourists visited Spain who spent €87,061 million, which is 86 per cent and 95 per cent of the visitors and amount spent in 2019, respectively.

Such data also show that in 2022 the average stay of these travellers was 7.5 days compared to 7.1 days spent in 2019, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to INE, the average expenses that international tourists made in Spain last year exceeded the figures for 2019 by 10.5 per cent.

“The data that we know today confirms the intense recovery of the tourism sector in 2022. The expectations we had of recovering the majority of international tourists from the pre-pandemic have been met, but the most important thing is that spending is growing more and also the average stay and this means an improvement in the quality and profitability of our sector,” the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto pointed out in this regard.

Further data from the INE reveal that total tourism expenditure reached €87,061 million last year, which is of 95 per cent of the expenditure figures marked in 2019. At the same time, the average expenditure per traveller was €1,217 in 2022, which is €116 more than the expenditure recorded in 2019.

The Netherlands saw a significant increase in terms of the main markets with an increase of 18.5 per cent compared to pre-pandemic levels, marking €4,904 million in total spending. In addition, a high increase in spending was also noted by French travellers by 7.3 per cent to reach €8,149 million.

Meanwhile, as far as the total expenses are concerned, the United Kingdom leads with €17,145 million, followed by Germany with €11,513 million, France with €8,149 million and the Nordic countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland with €5,959 million. The United States with €5.267 million, the Netherlands with €4.904 million and Italy with €3.533 million.

Moreover, based on INE statistics, in 2022, 71.6 million international tourists visited Spain, which is 86 per cent of the tourists that visited in 2019.

As a result, the main countries of origin for tourists in the same year are as follows:

  • United Kingdom, with 15.1 million tourists
  • France, with 10.1 million
  • Germany, with 9.8 million
  • Italy, with four million
  • Netherlands with 3.9 million

Besides, last year in Spain, the arrival of Dutch tourists was six per cent higher than that recorded in 2019.
