Spain Registered Over 2.5 Million Workers in Tourism Sector During October

The data provided by the national tourism body of Spain, Turespaña, have revealed that the number of affiliates related to tourist activities have exceeded 2.5 million.

According to Turespaña, Spain’s tourism sector registered a total of 2,543,749 affiliates to Social Security last month, which marks the highest number ever in the entire historical series for this month, surpassing the figures of October 2019 with 109,668, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Such data also show that on a year-to-year basis, the tourism sector experienced an increase of 6.4 per cent and had 17 consecutive months of promotions.

“These data as very positive since one in three new jobs in October was generated in the tourism sector, which demonstrates the decisive contribution of this industry to the recovery of the economy and employment in our country,” the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto pointed out in this regard.

As the Minister explains, the tourism sector shows its decisive contribution to the recovery of employment in Spain as it generates one in three new jobs in this country.

Based on Turespaña figures, in comparison to 2021, affiliates in tourist activities have increased by 152,740 workers, representing 12.6 per cent of the total in the national economy.

As a result, a positive change was noticed in all branches of tourism, including the hotel industry, the growth of which was by 85,647 employees. In food and beverage services has also been noted an increase of 53,997 workers, and another 31,650 in accommodation services.

Travel agencies also registered 4,794 new employees, while the group of other tourist activities has seen an increase of 62,299 workers.

From a total of 80.7 per cent of the representation of the number of employees in the tourism sector, an increase of eight per cent was seen during October in contrast with the same period in 2021. In addition, self-employment increased by 0.2 per cent as well.

During October, Turespaña data show that employment in the hotel industry and travel agencies and tour operators increased in all Autonomous Communities as a whole. However, the same does not apply to autonomous cities such as Ceuta and Melilla.

The highest growth in the number of tourism workers was observed in Catalonia, Andalusia, the Canary Islands, the Community of Madrid and the Community of Valencia. The Canary Islands alone saw an increase of 9.9 per cent year-on-year.

Previously, the same source revealed that during September, the Social Security of Spain registered around 2,613,583 employees in the tourism sector, also highlighting that for September, this figure exceeded the highest in the historical series for September 2019.
