Moroccans Were the Most Rejected Visa Applicants by Spain in 2023

Spain rejected 51,000 visa applications filed by Moroccan nationals in 2023, making this the highest number of visa requests denied for the year.

According to Schengen Statistics, Morocco was the top country of origin for all visa applications to Spain and subsequently received the highest number of rejections, Schengen.News reports.

More than a quarter of all requests (27.1 per cent) filed by Moroccan nationals to Spain, received a negative response. Moroccans accounted for 13.3 per cent of all visa applications received by Spain and also 20.3 per cent of all rejected visas.

Application Rates From Morocco Down by 6% in 2023

Although Moroccans represent the top visa applicants in Spain, a decrease of 6.1 per cent has been noticed in 2023. Last year, Spain received 201,000 visa requests. In 2023, that number dropped to 189,000.

The top ten countries of origin for visa applicants to Spain that received the most rejections in 2023 include Algeria, Ecuador, Russia, India, Pakistan, Egypt, the Dominican Republic and Bolivia.

Out of these ten countries, Pakistan had the highest rejection rates. Out of 18,000 visa applications received, 9,700 were denied, showing that 52.8 per cent of visa requests received a negative response.

The rejection rates were also high for Egyptians (38.9 per cent), Bolivians (38 per cent) and Algerians (32.9 per cent).

Chinese Nationals Were Granted Most Schengen Spain Visas in 2023

Spain approved 139,000 visas to Chinese nationals in 2023, which is 94 per cent of all applications received by this nationality. Moreover, this is the highest number of Schengen visas approved for a nationality by Spanish authorities. Morocco follows second with 123,000 approved visas and Russia with 92,000.

New Zealand and Australia had the highest approval rates with 132 and 121 per cent of visa applications from these countries being approved, respectively. While citizens of these two countries do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen Area, residents of third countries in New Zealand and Australia, such as Indian and Chinese nationals, need to obtain a visa in order to enter the Schengen States.

As per countries that have had the highest approvals, Jamaica holds the first position, with 99.2 per cent of all visas being granted. Spain received 3,062 applications from Jamaica in 2023, with 3,013 of those being approved.
