Cebu hosts inaugural UN Tourism Forum and 36th Joint Commission Meeting

Over 300 delegates from 30 countries will gather in Cebu for the UN Tourism Organization’s events, focusing on gastronomy and sustainable tourism. Highlights include tours and a gala night.

Cebu, Philippines, is set to welcome over 300 delegates from 30 countries this week for two prominent events organized by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNTO). The 36th Joint Meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific & the UN Tourism Commission for South Asia (36th CAP-CSA) and the First UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific will take place from June 26-28, 2024, in Cebu, Philippines, at the kind invitation of the Government of the Philippines.

According to a statement from UNTO, Cebu was selected as the venue for these significant gatherings, which will bolster the region’s standing in the global tourism sector. The UN Tourism Commission Meetings are the principal annual events for UN Tourism in the Asia and the Pacific region. They are attended by participants from UN Tourism Member States, UN Tourism Affiliate Members, and international and regional organizations.

The inaugural UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific, scheduled for June 26, will convene destinations and international experts to share insights and best practices. The forum aims to leverage the transformative power of gastronomy tourism to benefit local communities and the environment.

On June 28, the 36th CAP-CSA Joint Commission Meeting will cover key topics, including the presentation of the UN Tourism Programme of Work for 2024-2025 and discussions related to the UN Tourism Asia-Pacific Member States. This major UN meeting will also address preparations for World Tourism Day 2024 and strategies for implementing and prioritizing sustainable tourism, with a particular emphasis on green tourism and education.

The provincial government will use this platform to showcase Cebu’s pivotal role in the nation’s tourism industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore attractions such as Camotes Island, Dalaguete, Argao, and the famous Bojo River in Aloguinsan town.

In addition, the province will host a gala night and fashion show featuring designs by Cebuano artists. These events highlight Cebu’s rich cultural heritage and its dedication to sustainable tourism initiatives.
