Spain: Figures of Arrivals & Expenditures of International Tourists in October Close to Pre-Pandemic Levels

Nearly 7.2 million international passengers visited Spain in October this year, or 94.6 per cent of those who reached the country in the same month of 2019.

According to the Spanish Ministry of Tourism data, from the total of these travellers, as of  €8296 million were spent on their travel and stay, which is 99.7 per cent of the value registered in 2019, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Such data has also revealed that during the first ten months of this year, close to 63.1 million tourists visited Spain, or 84.6 per cent of the figures registered in the same period, in 2019. Meanwhile, their expenses reach €76,433 million, or 93.4 of those recorded in 2019.

Commenting on the October data, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Maria Reyes Maroto, said that the country is maintaining the recovery trend that began a year and a half ago, thus allowing it to reach pre-pandemic levels. She also added that the Spanish tourism sector is showing great strength despite the current uncertainty, which has been reflected very favorably in the economy and employment.

“According to our forecasts, this recovery trend will continue in the last months of the year thanks to the confidence offered by the destination Spain and the effectiveness of the measures adopted by the Government that is allowing inflation to be contained, which will allow us to close 2022 with figures close to pre-covid levels” the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto pointed out in this regard.

The data of the ministry further revealed that during October, the average cost per person increased notably compared to the same month in 2019, or an increase from €1,097 to €1,156, as well as the average stay from 6.81 days to 6,9.

In November, among the first emitting markets was the United Kingdom, also known as the market with more than 1.5 million tourists, followed by Germany, with almost 1.1 million, and France, with 917,245 tourists.

Visitors from the following three countries spent the most in Spain, in October this year than in the same month of 2019: the United Kingdom, with €1,641 million compared to €1,579.67 million; France with €692 million compared to €571 and Italy with €278 million compared to €234.

In addition, Catalonia also welcomed a large number of tourists, or nearly 1.5 million; followed by Illes Balears, with more than 1.3 million visitors; Canary Islands, with about 1.2; Andalusia, with more than a million; The Community of Valencia, with 865,908 million and the Community of Madrid, with 688,517 million.

Moreover, Illes Balears and Canarias surpassed the visitor figures for 2019 in October. At the same time, they exceeded the expenditure figures recorded in 2019. Thus, the Canary Islands recorded €1,552 million, the Balearic Islands €1,490 million, and the Community of Madrid €1,060 million.
