Estonian Accommodation Establishments Served Nearly 270,000 Tourists in October This Year

Estonian statistics have revealed that during this October, Estonian accommodation facilities served nearly 270,000 tourists, marking an increase of 19 per cent more compared to the same period last year.

Such data also show that during this period the number of foreign tourists was higher, while the number of domestic tourists decreased, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Commenting on the figures, Estonian Statistics analyst Helga Laurmaa, said that a total of 131,000 foreign tourists and 139,000 domestic tourists have been accommodated in Estonia in the month of October.

According to her, the number of foreign tourists has not yet returned to the levels before the Coronavirus pandemic crisis, while the figures are comparable to those of October 2010 and 2011.

“However, the number of foreign tourists was 58 per cent higher than in October 2021. Domestic tourism did not set a new record, with four per cent fewer domestic tourists than in October last year,” she also added.

Statistics show that compared to October 2021 more tourists from European countries, as well as from countries outside Europe, were accommodated in Estonian institutions during this October.

Meanwhile, the countries with the highest number of foreign visitors are Finland with 58,000 tourists and Latvia with a total of 19,000. As a result, the number of tourists from these neighbouring countries has increased by 88 per cent and 83 per cent, respectively, compared to October of the previous year.

Tourists coming from Finland did not reach 2019 levels, but the number of Latvian tourists was 31 per cent higher than in 2019. In addition, the number of tourists coming from Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, and Asian countries was much smaller than pre-pandemic.

Thus, a percentage of 77 per cent of foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in Harju county, followed by Pärnu with ten per cent, Tartu counties with five per cent and Saare with two per cent, which means that foreign tourists have passed a total of 272,000 nights in Estonia.

According to statistics, for a total of 69 per cent of local tourists, the aim of their trip was vacation, while the other 24 per cent were on business trips.

Data further show that 32 per cent of domestic tourists were accommodated in Harju county, 14 per cent in Pärnu county, 12 per cent in Tartu county, ten per cent in Ida-Viru county, and eight per cent in Saare county. The same reveals that in accommodations establishments domestic tourists spent a total of 230,000 nights.

Moreover, in October 2022, 973 accommodation establishments with five or more beds served visitors, which is 123 less than in September.

21,000 rooms and 50,000 beds were available for guests, where the room occupancy rate was 45 per cent. As for the average cost, it was €44 per person per guest night, which is one euro lower than in September. In Harju county, the average cost of a night per person was €47, up to €49 in Tartu county, €46 in Ida-Viru county, €43 in Saare county and €37 in Pärnu county.
