Dubai: The six-month countdown to Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, is set to begin this weekend.

In an announcement that marks the beginning of this significant countdown, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, has provided crucial details about the forthcoming lunar phases leading to Ramadan. According to Al Jarwan, the journey to Ramadan officially commences with the birth of the new crescent for the month of Rabi’ Al Awwal.

He pointed that the new crescent will be born on Friday, September 15 at 05:40am UAE time. On this day, as the sun sets, the crescent will be 12:43 hours old, positioned at a height of 4 degrees above the western horizon. Setting approximately 21 minutes after sunset, this astronomical event heralds the beginning of the month of Rabi’ Al Awwal on Saturday, September 16, according to precise astronomical calculations.

As per the astronomical predictions, the holy month is set to commence on Thursday, March 12. This sacred period of fasting from dawn to dusk will culminate on Friday, April 11, paving the way for Eid Al Fitr on Saturday, April 12.
