34% of All Tourism Nights Spent in EU in 2022 Occurred in July & August

A total of 34 per cent of tourist nights were concentrated in July and August in the European Union last year.

According to the latest report by the EU Agency of Statistics, Eurostat, in almost 75 per cent of EU regions classified under level two of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS 2), August emerged as the peak month for overnight stays, dominating 170 of the EU’s 242 NUTS two regions, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Close behind, July took first place in 62 EU regions, including most of the northern EU and parts of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary and Slovakia.

Moreover, within 15 coastal regions in Bulgaria, Greece, France, Croatia, Italy, Romania, and Sweden, a noteworthy trend unfolded as more than half of the tourism nights were spent during either July or August. These two months stood out as the paramount period for tourism in these specific regions.

In one out of five regions for which data are available (49 out of 242 regions), more than 40 per cent of the annual nights are spent in the top two months (July and August).

Eurostat further noted that Calabria, Italy, emerged as the EU region with the most pronounced seasonality, thus recording 64.8 per cent of tourist nights in July and August.

Italy is followed by Romania’s coastal region Sud-Est (64.5 per cent), the Bulgarian regions of Yugoiztochen (64.3 per cent) and Severoiztochen (60.9 per cent) and the Croatian region Jadranska Hrvatska (60.2 per cent), which also stood out as such of the most visited regions in the whole EU.

On the other hand, regions with the lowest seasonality showcased diversity in the peak months for tourism nights. As a result, Mayotte in France reported the lowest seasonality in the EU, with 18.8 per cent of tourism nights in 2022 occurring in March and May.

Following this trend were the Polish region Warszawski stołeczny (19.0 per cent) with June and August, the Spanish region Comunidad de Madrid (19.2 per cent) with June and October, the French island La Réunion (19.8 per cent) with August and October, and the Spanish region Canarias (20.0 per cent) with July and August.

Moreover, Eurostat revealed that regions incorporating capital cities tend to attract tourists throughout the year, whether for personal or professional reasons, resulting in a less pronounced seasonal pattern.

The authority also added that in 15 out of the 22 EU countries with regional subdivisions, the capital region stands out as the least seasonal, encompassing areas such as Brussels, Sofia, Prague, Copenhagen, Dublin, Madrid, Zagreb, Rome, Vilnius, Budapest, Vienna, Warsaw, Bucharest, Bratislava, and Stockholm.
