First Airline Lands A Commercial Flight At The New Tulum Airport

Mexicana de Aviación, Mexico’s renowned airline, experienced a delayed return to the skies on Tuesday, with its first flight to Tulum International Airport arriving five hours behind schedule due to dense fog. Departing punctually from Mexico City, the aircraft was rerouted to Merida, where it remained grounded for over five hours until conditions in Tulum improved, eventually landing at 1:28 p.m.

This flight signifies the airline’s much-anticipated comeback after a 13-year hiatus. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted that Mexicana de Aviación will now serve 20 destinations, including several not currently serviced by other commercial airlines.

The airline resumed operations on Tuesday, initially covering 14 domestic routes, with plans to expand to four more, as announced by President López Obrador. This expansion is part of the airline’s strategy to connect key destinations across Mexico.

Under the management of the Ministry of Defense (Sedena), Mexicana de Aviación is part of the Olmeca–Maya–Mexica airport, railway, and auxiliary services group. This group oversees several major transport hubs, including the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in the State of Mexico, and airfields in Tulum, Chetumal, Campeche, Puebla, and Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas.

Mexicana de Aviación’s inaugural passenger flight ascended towards Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum, marking a significant moment for the airline. Tulum’s airport is set to become the secondary hub for Mexicana’s operations, establishing a new focal point for its expanding flight network.
