Hotel Occupancy In The Mexican Caribbean To Surpass 95% During Easter

According to projections based on bookings made for the upcoming Holy Week, hoteliers in the Mexican Caribbean anticipate hotel occupancy rates to surpass 95 percent.

Quintana Roo is one of the most attractive destinations for visitors, with 130,123 rooms available in 1,149 hotels.

The presidents of the Cancun hotel associations, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, Jesús Almaguer Salazar, and of Riviera Maya, Toni Chaves, who together represent more than 70 percent of the room supply in the region, foresee the biggest spike between March 24 and 30.

For the 2023 season, the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat reported that 1.3 million tourists were welcomed during Holy Week. This was an increase of 5 percent compared to 2022. A similar upswing is expected this year, according to the hotel managers’ forecasts.

“We have good prospects of maintaining this year occupancy rate we have seen since the beginning of the year, as shown by the state’s hotels and airports,” stated the leaders of the hotel sector.

Useful Tips For Vacations In The Mexican Caribbean During Busy Easter Season

During Easter, the Mexican Caribbean is a hotspot for tourists seeking sun, sand, and sea. However, finding less crowded destinations in this region during the holiday period requires a bit of insight and planning.

While popular spots like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum tend to see a surge in visitors, there are ways to enjoy the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean without the masses.

Here are some useful tips for vacations during the busy Easter Season:

Choose Off-Peak Travel Dates: If your schedule allows, consider arriving before the peak Easter week or staying after. The days leading up to and following Easter can offer a more tranquil experience while still allowing you to enjoy the pleasant weather and attractions.

Explore Lesser-Known Destinations: The Mexican Caribbean is dotted with hidden gems that many tourists overlook. Places like Isla Holbox, Bacalar, Costa Maya, and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve offer breathtaking natural beauty without the crowds. Holbox is known for its laid-back vibe and stunning beaches, Bacalar for its seven-color lagoon, and Sian Ka’an for its untouched wilderness.

Book Accommodations Early: For those seeking quieter stays, look for boutique hotels, eco-lodges, or private villas away from the main tourist strips. These can offer a secluded retreat from the hustle and bustle, allowing for a more personalized and relaxing holiday experience.

Venture Off the Beaten Path: Even in well-trodden destinations, you can find tranquility by exploring off-the-beaten-path attractions. Consider guided tours that take you to lesser-known cenotes, snorkeling spots away from the main reefs, or cultural tours in smaller communities.

Enjoy Local Traditions: Easter in Mexico is rich with cultural and religious traditions. Participating in or observing these local practices can offer a unique perspective on the holiday and a break from the typical tourist activities. Check local event calendars for processions, ceremonies, and community gatherings.

Stay Safe: Traveling in the Mexican Caribbean is generally safe but it’s very important to follow safety guidelines and travel advisories. The U.S. Embassy’s recently issued message for spring break travelers emphasizes safety precautions for U.S. citizens visiting Mexico amid crime. It highlights the importance of staying informed about local laws, avoiding risky behaviors, and being aware of one’s surroundings to prevent incidents related to crime, health emergencies, and other potential risks.
