St. John (U.S. Virgin Islands)

St. John is a bit more exclusive than the other Virgin Islands. However, if you’re looking for an idyllic holiday in nature without crowds, it’s the place to be.

More than half of the island is covered by the Virgin Islands National Park full of incredible white-sand beaches, several rare plants and animals, and historic plantation sites.

The best way to discover the park is to take a hike. There are more than 20 hiking trails to choose from and you can have them pretty much to yourself. Any levels are welcome but make sure you come prepared – bring some water, snacks, and a map. Many trails have really bad cell phone access.

You can also engage in water sports like windsurfing, kayaking, or snorkeling in Cinnamon Bay. You will find a bed of coral reefs with plenty of colorful fish, and occasionally sea turtles, and rays just a few meters of the shore.

At Little Cinnamon Beach, you can also explore a small wreckage. Just note you will have to hike the rocky shoreline to get to the beach first but it’s well worth it.

Charlotte Amalie will definitely enchant all history buffs. It’s where the famous 1680s Fort Christian is, which served as a prison and a government office throughout the years. The second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere is also nestled in the colonial streets of Charlotte Amalie.

For the best beaches, go to Magen’s Bay or Sapphire Beach. They both offer crystal-clear water, soft white sand, and views of the neighboring island of St. John.

On the other hand, for sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, hike or drive to Drake’s Seat. Alternatively, zipline at the iconic Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline Park. It’s scary but we guarantee you’ll have fun.

St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands)

The towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted are the perfect option to breathe in the 18th-century Virgin Islands atmosphere. On top of that, they both boast a beautiful waterfront and a fantastic food scene featuring a blend of Caribbean, Danish, and African flavors.

On the island’s eastern tip, you will find Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States. We recommend you get up early one day and take a trip there. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunrise.

A visit to St. Croix wouldn’t be complete without a tour of a rum distillery, such as Cruzan Rum Distillery or the world-famous Captain Morgan. You can learn about the rum-making process and try a few samples.
